Inverted Nipple

An inverted nipple occasionally in vaginated nipple is a condition where the nipple, instead of pointing outward, is retracted into the breast. In some cases, the nipple will be temporarily protruded if stimulated, but in others, the inversion remains regardless of stimulus. Women and men can have inverted nipples.

Individuals with inverted nipples may find that their nipples protract come out temporarily or permanently during pregnancy, or as a result of breastfeeding. Most women with inverted nipples who give birth are able to breastfeed without complication, but inexperienced mothers may experience higher than average pain and soreness when initially attempting to nurse. When a mother uses proper breastfeeding technique, the infant latches onto the areola, not the nipple, so women with inverted nipples are actually able to breastfeed without issue. An infant that latches on well may be able to slush out an inverted nipple. The use of a breast pump or other suction device immediately before a feeding may help to draw out inverted nipples. A hospital grade electric pump may be used for this purpose. Some women also find that using a nipple shield can help facilitate breastfeeding. Frequent stimulation such as sexual intercourse and foreplay such as nipple sucking also helps the nipple protract.

Plastic surgery is one method of protracting inverted nipples. If a woman elects to have this surgery performed on her inverted nipples, it can permanently destroy her capacity to breastfeed. Another method of protracting inverted nipples is to have the nipple pierced. This method will only be effective if the nipple can be temporarily protracted. If pierced when protracted, the jewelry may prevent the nipple from returning to its inverted state. The success of both of these methods, from a cosmetic standpoint, is mixed.

Other strategies for protracting inverted nipples include regularly stimulating the nipples to a protruding state, in an attempt to gradually loosen the nipple tissue. Some sex toys designed for nipple stimulation, such as suction cups or clamps may also cause inverted nipples to protract or stay protracted longer. Ptosis is a natural part of the aging process, though the rate at which a woman develops ptosis depends on many factors. Ptosis can result after pregnancy, or after weight gain and subsequent loss. Breast size is a factor in ptosis, with larger breasts becoming ptotic more quickly. Pseudoptosis is the condition where the nipple is at the level of the inframammary crease, but the breast itself has not dropped. Surgeons offering plastic surgery to address ptosis categorize the condition by the relationship that the nipple has to the inframammary crease.

Anatomically, the breasts are composed of soft, glandular tissue, with few support structures, such as connective tissue. Breasts are composed of the mammary glands, which remain relatively constant throughout life, as well as the adipose tissue or fat tissue that surrounds the mammary glands. It is the amount and distribution of adipose tissue and, to a lesser extent, glandular tissue that leads to variations in breast size. For example, Fischtein, Herold and Desmarais 2005 found that of a sample of 1,479 Canadians, 72.4% felt that toplessness on city streets should be illegal, but in public parks only 62.1% felt it should be illegal and on public beaches only 48.1% felt that it should be illegal. The results for toplessness on city streets varied by gender, with significantly more women responding that it should be illegal than men; by age, with those aged 40–49 least likely 67.5% to think it should be illegal and those aged 20–29 most likely 79.9%; and by religious commitment, with those attending church at least weekly most likely 85.1% to think it should be illegal and those never attending least likely 57.7%. The differences became less significant for toplessness in public parks and even less so for toplessness on public beaches. The study highlighted the range of attitudes towards public nudity.

In some periods of European history, female shoulders and legs may have been considered intimate parts. More conservative viewpoints in the West in some contexts still find it appropriate that females should cover their shoulders, particularly when entering a church or other sacred space.

In Islamic traditions, the definition of awrah is similar to the definition of intimate parts in Western culture. The extent of cover for the female body depends upon the situation, but may include the hair, shoulders and neck in addition to the aforementioned intimate parts. The entire body except the face and hands should be covered in public or in front of unrelated men. The Hanafi school of thought, which is followed by most Muslims in the world, agree that the feet are not part of the awrah and therefore may be revealed.

Exposure of one's intimate parts, particularly unintended exposure, is typically connected with feelings of shame. Such exposure may be subject to strict social rules, social control and criminal justice; see indecent exposure.
